ISBN: 1451661789
Title: The Distance Between Us Pdf A Memoir

One of the Best Adult Books 4 Teens 2012 (School Library Journal)One the 15 Best Books of 2012 (The Christian Science Monitor )“In this poignant memoir about her childhood in Mexico, Reyna Grande skillfully depicts another side of the immigrant experience—the hardships and heartbreaks of the children who are left behind. Through her brutally honest firsthand account of growing up in Mexico without her parents, Grande sheds light on the often overlooked consequence of immigration—the disintegration of a family.” (Sonia Nazario, Pulitzer Prize winner, and author of Enrique's Journey)Award-winning novelist (Across a Hundred Mountains) Grande captivates and inspires in her memoir. Raised in Mexico in brutal poverty during the 1980s, four-year-old Grande and her two siblings lived with their cruel grandmother after both parents departed for the U.S. in search of work. Grande deftly evokes the searing sense of heartache and confusion created by their parents’ departure. Eight years later her father returned and reluctantly agreed to take his children to the States. Yet life on the other side of the border was not what Grande imagined: her father’s new girlfriend’s indifference to the three children becomes more than apparent. Though Grande’s father continually stressed the importance of his children obtaining an education, his drinking resulted in violence, abuse, and family chaos. Surrounded by family turmoil, Grande discovered a love of writing and found solace in library books, and she eventually graduated from high school and went on to become the first person in her family to graduate from college. Tracing the complex and tattered relationships binding the family together, especially the bond she shared with her older sister, the author intimately probes her family’s history for clues to its disintegration. Recounting her story without self-pity, she gracefully chronicles the painful results of a family shattered by repeated separations and traumas (Aug.)   (Publishers Weekly: Starred Review)“A brutally honest book…akin to being the “Angela’s Ashes” of the modern Mexican immigrant experience.” (LA Times)“Reyna Grande is a fierce, smart, shimmering light of a writer with an important story to tell.” (Cheryl Strayed Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail)“I’ve been waiting for this book for decades. The American story of the new millennium is the story of the Latino immigrant, yet how often has the story been told by the immigrant herself? What makes Grande’s beautiful memoir all the more extraordinary is that, through this hero’s journey, she speaks for millions of immigrants whose voices have gone unheard.” (Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street)“The sadness at the heart of Grande’s story is unrelenting; this is the opposite of a light summer read. But that’s OK, because . . . this book should have a long shelf life.” (Slate)“A timely and a vivid example of how poverty and immigration can destroy a family.” (The Daily Beast)“Grande consistently displays a fierce willingness to ask tough questions, accept startling answers, and candidly render emotional and physical violence.” (Kirkus Reviews) Reyna Grande is an award-winning author, motivational speaker, and writing teacher. As a girl, she crossed the US–Mexico border to join her family in Los Angeles, a harrowing journey chronicled in The Distance Between Us, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist that has been adopted as the common read selection by over twenty schools and colleges and fourteen cities across the country. Her other books include the novels Across a Hundred Mountains, winner of a 2007 American Book Award, and Dancing with Butterflies, and The Distance Between Us, Young Reader’s Version. She lives in Woodland, CA with her husband and two children. Visit ReynaGrande.com.

“In this poignant memoir about her childhood in Mexico, Reyna Grande skillfully depicts another side of the immigrant experience—the hardships and heartbreaks of the children who are left behind.” —Sonia Nazario, Pulitzer Prize winner, and author of Enrique's Journey

Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this “compelling . . . unvarnished, resonant” (BookPage) story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. As her parents make the dangerous trek across the Mexican border to “El Otro Lado” (The Other Side) in pursuit of the American dream, Reyna and her siblings are forced into the already overburdened household of their stern grandmother. When their mother at last returns, Reyna prepares for her own journey to “El Otro Lado” to live with the man who has haunted her imagination for years, her long-absent father.

Funny, heartbreaking, and lyrical, The Distance Between Us poignantly captures the confusion and contradictions of childhood, reminding us that the joys and sorrows we experience are imprinted on the heart forever, calling out to us of those places we first called home.

Also available in Spanish as La distancia entre nosotros.

A young girl and her family cross the border A very moving story revealing the tragedy and triumph of coming to America from Mexico and succeeding. Anyone who has thought about building a wall to keep immigrants out of the US, needs to read this book. Ms. Grande writes about her experiences of and her triumph over abuse, neglect and abandonment. She tells her life story in a clear and efficient manner without rhetoric. She is so efficient in her storytelling that it belies the extent of the pain and anguish she and her beloved sisters and brother must have endured. I felt like she was trying to protect the reader from the true horror of her experience.A book for our times -- a "must-read" for all This spring, I've read the texts from my friend's Albion College course on the Mexican-American Immigrant Experience. I just finished the last book, The Distance Between Us, by Reyna Grande. Grande's memoir of her childhood is powerful: her Mexican parents came (illegally) to "El Otro Lado" (The Other Side), Los Angeles, to find work, and left her and her siblings with their abusive grandmother. Later, Reyna and siblings ran across the border to join their father, and started school here, not knowing a word of English. (Reyna was the first of her family to graduate from college.) This book is painful, powerful, well-written -- difficult to read at times, but I couldn't put it down. Especially at this time of "Build The Wall", this book needs to be read. Strongly recommend!A great story for both fiction and non-fiction lovers I thought I had lived a portion of my childhood in poverty, but when I read this wonderfully written memoir, I saw that poverty in the US cannot be compared to poverty in Mexico! This true story reflects Reyna Grande's struggle with abandonment, "for the greater good," dysfunctional parents, and her deep love for both of her homes, the first in Mexico, and then her new home in the United States where, thanks to the Reagan amnesty program, she embraced citizenship and opportunity. This child, then woman, writes with love for some who would be unlovable for most of us and with a positive view of what would seem ugly and unbearable to most. I love her though I'll probably never have the privilege to meet her.Besides Reyna's wonderful, well-written story, it was fun to practico mi limited, EspaƱol, more aptly, as you can read in this sentence, Spanglish. Reyna punctuates portions of her English with it, and mostly explains each Spanish word as she goes.I loved this book and would recommend it to fiction and non-fiction lovers alike.

On Becoming Baby Wise Download

ISBN: 1932740139
Title: On Becoming Baby Wise Pdf Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep
Author: Gary Ezzo
Published Date: 2012
Page: 279

"From a pediatrician's perspective, this is a sigh of welcome relief for sleepless, weary parents."         -- DAVID BLANK, M.D. of LONGMONT, CO

Distinguished pediatrician Dr Robert Bucknam, M.D. and co-author Gary Ezzo are two of the world's leading experts on infant management concepts. In this revised 5th edition, they have updated their groundbreaking approach which has found favor with over six million parents in all 50 states and has been translated into 20 languages around the world.

For over 25 years, On Becoming Babywise has been the de facto newborn parenting manual for naturally synchronizing your baby's feeding time, waketime and nighttime sleep cycles, so the whole family can sleep through the night.

In his 28th year as a licensed Pediatrician, Dr. Robert Bucknam, M.D. along with co-author Gary Ezzo,  demonstrate how order and stability are mutual allies of every newborn's metabolism and how parents can take advantage of these biological propensities. In particular, they note how an infant's body responds to the influences of parental routine or the lack thereof.

Early chapters start with explorations of everyday aspects of infant management such as the three basic elements of daytime activities for newborns: feeding time, waketime, and naptime.

Practical discussions then focus on broad and niche topics including feeding philosophies, baby sleep problems, baby scheduling challenges, nap routines, sleep training multiples, baby sleeping props, Colic and Reflux and many other dimensions which impact breast feeding schedules, bottle feeding tips and baby sleep training.

Five resource Appendixes provide additional reference material:

1) Taking care of baby and mom
2) A timeline of what to expect and when
3) Baby Sleep Training Problems and Solutions
4) Monitoring Your Baby's Growth
5) Healthy Baby Growth Charts

On Becoming Babywise is more than an infant-management concept. It is a mindset for successful parenthood. It can help any parent develop a plan that meets both the needs of a new baby and of the entire family. These principles have worked for millions of parents and, when applied with common sense to your unique situation, can work wonderfully for you too! Recommended by doctors across the country.
"As a mom, I parented both ways.  As a certified lactation educator, I know how discouraging it is to feed a baby around the clock with no apparent advantage and how fatigue will affect her milk supply.  I also know how discouraging the first eighteen months of parenting can be without a plan.  I know, because with my first child, I did everything the opposite of what is taught in this book.  Before my second baby was born, I was introduced to the Babywise concepts.  Applying these principles revolutionized my thinking.  Instead of being in baby bondage, I was liberated to be the mother God wanted me to be.  I have consistently used this series with the women I counsel.   These mothers have met with tremendous success, whether bottle or breastfeeding."
-- Barbara Philips, R.N., C.L.E.  Los Angeles, California

Shameful This book goes against learning and normal development in the relationship of new mothers and their infants. Following the advice given could lead to attachment issues, malnutrition, and generally bad outcomes. I would rather my baby be healthy and loved than to sleep through the night right away. Please research the opposition before following the terrible advice in this book.Great parenting advice so your baby can sleep better! (And no, your baby doesn't go hungry!!) I got this book from a friend when I was expecting and loved the advice given and tried to inplement what I could. Before I started reading it, though, I saw a lot of negative reviews about how the author says it's ok for your baby to be hungry so I was very skeptical to start reading; however, that isn't what the book says at all-quite the opposite! It teaches you--among other things-- how to recognize when your baby is hungry versus something else (wet, dirty, cold, tired, etc), how to use a schedule that is flexible so your baby can eat at relatively the same times while still not going hungry, and how to encourage night time sleep. My daughter was a great sleeper right off the bat but using this book has helped me give her better nighttime sleep! I knew not to rush in if she gives off one regular cry because she's likely still sleeping and so many other things. I wasn't able to do the eat, wake time, sleep cycle (believe me, I tried!) since my daughter would want to eat again before sleeping. So I did the eat, sleep, wake and it still worked. My friend who gave it to me said that happened to her middle child and she did the same thing. Whatever works! My daughter is 18 months now and we have used a couple of the other books in the series and my daughter is literally awesome!! I know that using boundaries that were explained in the book has been a huge factor in this. I'm a much more competent parent than I would have been without these books. Thank you Baby Wise!!Also, I have a friend who was super sleep deprived with a three-month-old and I ordered this for her. Her baby went from maybe sleeping 4-5 hours at her longest stretch (which I think was during the day) to sleeping 8 hours at night within a few weeks. She's still working on getting the hours up but I haven't asked to see how diligent she is in the program.A MUST READ! I used this book with my first son and he was sleeping through the night at 12 weeks and has been an amazing sleeper ever since. Celebrated his second birthday yesterday. He takes about a 2 hour nap daily and goes to bed at 6pm. He usually doesn’t wake up till 7:30/8am the following morning. If I could i would shout the praises of this book from the roof tops. My second son is due this December...hoping to have him sleeping through the night closer to 8 weeks like the book boasts. The lie that you won’t sleep when you have children has gone on long enough! It doesn’t have to be true for you! Be the parent...not the follower!

The Ultimate Scholarship Book 2019 Pdf

ISBN: 1617601306
Title: The Ultimate Scholarship Book 2019 Pdf Billions of Dollars in Scholarships, Grants and Prizes
Author: Tanabe
Published Date: 2018-06-12
Page: 784
Information on 1.5 million scholarships, grants, and prizes is easily accessible in this revised directory with more than 300 new listings that feature awards indexed by career goal, major, academics, public service, talent, athletics, religion, ethnicity, and more. Each entry contains all the necessary information for students and parents to complete the application process, including eligibility requirements, how to obtain an application, how to get more information about each award, sponsor website listings, award amounts, and key deadlines. With scholarships for high school, college, graduate, and adult students, this guide also includes tips on how to conduct the most effective search, how to write a winning application, and how to avoid scams.

Very poorly organized Not impressed with the way this book is “organized”. The State of Residence section is not even organized by state! I bought this thinking it would help direct and pinpoint my search, but it’s just as overwhelming as the internet.... not only lists SO MANY scholarships but also has good information about the entire process of applying for scholarships ... This book not only lists SO MANY scholarships but also has good information about the entire process of applying for scholarships and how best to use this book.Good for listing, but has a lot of room for improvement I think I liked the concept of this book more than the actual book itself - going through there are certainly a lot of scholarships listed, letting you get info right there on those scholarships. The organization could be significantly better (for example: the “by state” category has a lot of room for improvement), and a few of the scholarships listed (that I have looked at online) are out of date by at least a few years. It does offer some nice advice on applying for scholarships though!

"Brims with a surprising amount of insight and practical advice." --The Wall Street Journal

Daniel H. Pink, the #1 bestselling author of Drive and To Sell Is Human, unlocks the scientific secrets to good timing to help you flourish at work, at school, and at home.

Everyone knows that timing is everything. But we don't know much about timing itself. Our lives are a never-ending stream of "when" decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about a person. Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork.

Timing, it's often assumed, is an art. In When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Pink shows that timing is really a science.

Drawing on a rich trove of research from psychology, biology, and economics, Pink reveals how best to live, work, and succeed. How can we use the hidden patterns of the day to build the ideal schedule? Why do certain breaks dramatically improve student test scores? How can we turn a stumbling beginning into a fresh start? Why should we avoid going to the hospital in the afternoon? Why is singing in time with other people as good for you as exercise? And what is the ideal time to quit a job, switch careers, or get married?

In When, Pink distills cutting-edge research and data on timing and synthesizes them into a fascinating, readable narrative packed with irresistible stories and practical takeaways that give readers compelling insights into how we can live richer, more engaged lives.

Eyeopening! I thought I was good at time management. And then I read Dan's new book. Now I realize that I knew nothing about the science of timing or true productivity. As with all Dan Pink books, When, is well written, well researched, and completely eye-opening. I can't wait to start applying the principles of When into my life and work. When should you buy this book? Now! It really is a game changer!Loads of research on humans at work...distilled down to what it means to YOU I've read all of Pink's books, starting with Free Agent Nation back in 2002 when I launched my own business. He has a gift of taking boatloads of facts, research and scientific experiments and making it all readable and applicable for the common man. And that is what he has again delivered in When. The cited research can at times come at you fast and furious, as if it's on a pre-Christmas Amazon distribution center conveyor belt. But if you're patient, he will put eventually put a bow on it and tell you what it means for YOU. And to that note, I'm already using the When Daily Planner to prioritize my Peak, Trough and Recovery periods of the day. With Pink's books you will always learn something useful about humans at work and how you can personally benefit from the mounds of research on the topic. Now my only question is...why was I just now taking time from my highly productive "Recovery" portion of the day to write a book review on Amazon? Oh well, I guess I still have work to do in successfully implementing of all these great ideas!Sixth Graders Want to Know More About When! With a group of sixth graders today I read aloud the introduction to WHEN about Captain Turner's Decision. I asked the students to close their eyes and create pictures in their heads about the sinking of the ship the Lusitania. I read the few pages aloud, ok with some drama Daniel Pink would have been proud of! I did this as part of a lesson about comparing and contrasting the sinking of the Titanic to the Lusitania. Before we could get to my lesson objective the students wanted to know more about WHEN and the timing of things. They peppered me with questions that I don't have answers to, YET! I can't wait to read more of WHEN and share it with students and educators everywhere! #AwesomeDay
