Title: Just Mercy Pdf A Story of Justice and Redemption

Number-one New York Times best seller

A powerful true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to fix our broken system of justice - from one of the most brilliant and influential lawyers of our time

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx

Named one of the Best Books of the Year by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Seattle Times, Esquire, and Time

Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn't commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship - and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Just Mercy is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer's coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice.

"You don't have to read too long to start cheering for this man.... The message of this book...is that evil can be overcome, a difference can be made. Just Mercy will make you upset and it will make you hopeful." (Ted Conover, The New York Times Book Review)

"Inspiring... a work of style, substance and clarity... Stevenson is not only a great lawyer, he's also a gifted writer and storyteller." (The Washington Post)

"As deeply moving, poignant and powerful a book as has been, and maybe ever can be, written about the death penalty." (The Financial Times)

"Brilliant." (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Every American Should Read This Book Everyone in America should read this book--what an eye opener! I had no idea that this type of justice was going on in America. Children as young as 13 years old being sent to prison for life without the possibility of parole--and for non-homicidal crimes! Women sent to prison for life for crib death babies when there is no proof that the mother was involved in the death. People on death row who were completely innocent of the crimes they were found guilty of committing. Prosecutors and other officials railroading innocent people to convictions and then giving them death penalties. Judges overruling juries who gave the convicted person life behind bars and instead putting them on death row. Bryan Stevenson has provided an outstanding view of some of the justice being handed out in parts of our country. Most of the people convicted are either extremely poor, of color, or both. Mr. Stevenson, you are an amazing human being for devoting your career to this cause.Justice, Mercy, and Redemption When I first started reading this book I really had no idea what to expect or why I should even take the time to read it. My tendency is to put things into "liberal" and "conservative" buckets and this one seemingly fit into the liberal bucket and I am a professed conservative. I still am but I have to say that I was moved by this story beyond my expectations. There is indeed so much injustice in this world and there is plenty of opportunity for mercy; even mercy extended in unexpected places. The plight of the poor and downtrodden is overwhelming to consider and this book provided a reason to view people's circumstances before providing condemnation. I would wholeheartedly recommend reading it.Powerful, important book -- does the American justice system fail the disenfranchised? At its core, Bryan Stevenson's JUST MERCY is about the inherent inhumanity of the American justice system. As Stevenson puts it, "Presumptions of guilt, poverty, racial bias, and a host of other social, structural, and political dynamics have created a system that is defined by error, a system in which thousands of innocent people now suffer in prison." This is a system that condemns children to life imprisonment without parole, that makes petty theft a crime as serious as murder, and that has declared war on hundreds of thousands of people with substance abuse problems by imprisoning them and denying them help. Stevenson is an attorney with the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, an organization that offers free legal services to the poor and disenfranchised. His book is a sobering look at criminal justice from the perspective of those least likely to be treated fairly.JUST MERCY explores a number of devastating cases, including children as young as fourteen facing life imprisonment, and scores of people on death row - mostly poor, and mostly black - who have been unfairly convicted. But the central focus is on Walter McMillan, a black man sentenced to death for the murder of a prominent young white woman. McMillan claimed he did not commit this crime, and he had a score of alibi witnesses, but he was quickly railroaded into both a conviction and a death sentence. Stevenson spent years working to get McMillan a new trial, and the two men remained connected throughout the remainder of McMillan's life. It's a fascinating case, one that involves perjury, police corruption, a racist judge, and prosecutors more intent on protecting their political positions than finding justice.Stevenson's thesis is that justice itself is denied for the millions of Americans who are poor, non-white, mentally ill, or otherwise disenfranchised. Ours is no longer a country that sees compassion as a virtue; instead, we write harsher and harsher laws that demand longer and longer sentences for those we consider undesirables. "The true measure of our character," Stevenson writes, "is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned." And by the final page of JUST MERCY, it is quite clear that we, as Americans, have fallen short. It's rare these days to meet someone who truly dedicates himself to those least able to help themselves, especially someone who isn't after media attention or self-promotion. Stevenson's tireless efforts to give solace to the many men and women on death row are both inspirational and affirming. He isn't successful in freeing all of his clients - more than a few are executed in spite of his pleas - but what he offers them is more than just legal support. He listens to them, takes them seriously, investigates in ways the police failed to do, and gives them a voice they had otherwise been denied. In the end, Stevenson writes, "we have to reform a system of criminal justice that continues to treat people better if they are rich and guilty than if they are poor and innocent." That's a tough lesson for a world too often motivated by money, power, and political position. The people Bryan Stevenson works for have no money, no power, and no political position, but they are human beings deserving of compassion and mercy. "Each of us is more than the worst thing we've ever done," Stevenson writes, adding, "the opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice." As Americans, we can't be proud of our justice system until it offers justice to all of our people, and not only those with money and influence. It's a hard sell in today's mercenary, "me first" environment. But Stevenson's voice is one we all need to hear. JUST MERCY is a powerful and eye-opening book. I recommend it highly.

Title: Wild Game Pdf My Mother, Her Lover, and Me
Author: Adrienne Brodeur
Published Date: 2019
Page: 256

An Amazon Best Book of October 2019: When Adrienne Brodeur was fourteen years old, her mother entered her room to tell her “Ben Souther just kissed me.” Her mother wasn’t upset, despite the fact that Ben was not Adrienne’s stepfather. In fact, she was happy about it. This event sets off Brodeur’s memoir exploring her outwardly comfortable upbringing and the odd triangle that she, her mother, and Ben eventually created—the result is an engaging, at times breathless, read that builds in anticipation, even after that bang of a beginning. There is barely a wasted word in the book, and the tensions that develop between various members of the family, good or bad, recognized or not—as well the tensions we feel as readers—keep the narrative humming. It’s difficult to describe what makes one memoir more readable than another. But put this one at the top of your list.--Chris Schluep, Amazon Book Review

A daughter’s tale of living in the thrall of her magnetic, complicated mother, and the chilling consequences of her complicity.

On a hot July night on Cape Cod when Adrienne was fourteen, her mother, Malabar, woke her at midnight with five simple words that would set the course of both of their lives for years to come: Ben Souther just kissed me.

Adrienne instantly became her mother’s confidante and helpmate, blossoming in the sudden light of her attention, and from then on, Malabar came to rely on her daughter to help orchestrate what would become an epic affair with her husband’s closest friend. The affair would have calamitous consequences for everyone involved, impacting Adrienne’s life in profound ways, driving her into a precarious marriage of her own, and then into a deep depression. Only years later will she find the strength to embrace her life—and her mother—on her own terms.

Wild Game is a brilliant, timeless memoir about how the people close to us can break our hearts simply because they have access to them, and the lies we tell in order to justify the choices we make. It’s a remarkable story of resilience, a reminder that we need not be the parents our parents were to us.

From acclaimed author Dr. Jason Fung, a revolutionary guide to reversing diabetes.

Dr. Jason Fung forever changed the way we think about obesity with his best-selling book, The Obesity Code. Now he has set out to do the same for type 2 diabetes.

Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease―a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. The only way to treat type 2 diabetes effectively, he argues, is proper dieting and intermittent fasting―not medication.

This May Be the Long-Overdue Breakthrough... I waffled between a four or five-star review, but settled on four-star because 1) I haven't read all of the pertinent scientific literature, and 2) I'm not sure how feasible the Fung protocol is for the average type 2 diabetic (or PWD if you prefer). When I mention diabetes or diabetic hereafter, it's always type 2 diabetes, not type 1.This book builds on the success of very low-carb eating as a therapeutic approach to type 2 diabetes. But it goes beyond that by advocating frequent prolonged fasts as a potential cure for diabetes. I'm talking about fasting for 30-36 hours at a stretch, for up to three times a week. On non-fasting days, his patients typically eat a low-carb diet, which makes sense to me. Two week-long sample meal plans are provided. Thus far, none of my patients have asked me about fasting. If the underlying science checks out, I'd seriously consider the Fung approach myself if I had T2 diabetes. The longest fast I've done has been 24 hours. That's pretty easy for me, probably because I eat low-carb, so my fat-burning cellular machinery is ready for action. In bro-science terms, I'm keto-adapted. I have no idea if fasting 36 hours would be any harder than 24. Maybe it's easier if you're obese.Dr Fung shares many clinical vignettes from his Intensive Dietary Management Program in Canada. He doesn't mention how many of his patients start the program and then drop out because it's too difficult. Why the intermittent fasting? Because it seems to be an efficient way to reverse the fat build-up in the liver and pancreas that cause the high blood sugars of diabetes. That fat build-up, in turn, is caused by high insulin levels, according to Dr Fung's working theory of diabetes causation. The author says this is what causes diabetes and prediabetes. First, remember that dietary carbohydrates cause a release of insulin from the pancreas, in order to dispose of the carbohydrate as an immediate source of energy or for storage in the liver and skeletal muscles as glycogen. If the carb is not needed for immediate energy and if the glycogen tanks in liver and muscle are full, the glucose is converted to fat. That fat is ideally stored in specialized fat cells (adipocytes), but can also be stored in the liver and pancreas (called visceral fat). Excessive fat in the liver and pancreas eventually impairs function of those organs. To prevent this overload, cells have to become resistant to insulin's effects. Diets rich in highly-processed, refined carbohydrates (especially fructose, sucrose, and starches) over-stimulate insulin release from the pancreas. Over time, this causes not only body fat, but also fat build-up in the liver and pancreas, impairing their function.Intermittent fasting and very low-carb eating directly and immediately ameliorate the high insulin levels that cause diabetes. The fasting allows for extended periods of low insulin, which helps tissues regain or maintain sensitivity to insulin, he says.Dr Fung rightfully points out that his program should be done under physician supervision, especially if you take drugs that can cause hypoglycemia. I can see patients taking this book to office visits and asking "Doc, can I try this?" Unfortunately, many doctors won't take the time to read the book.I wonder if this manifesto was actually written to convince physicians that what we've been doing for years is misguided, and that Fung's approach is the way to go.My favorite sentence: "...the very low-carbohydrate diet does remarkably well, giving you 71% of the benefits of the fasting without actual fasting."My least favorite sentence: With regards to side effects (e.g., hunger pangs, muscle cramps, headaches) when starting fasting: "These side effects are often signs that the body is dumping its toxic sugar load." No, that's just good ol' "induction flu," more recently called keto flu.I don't know if Dr Fung's causation theory of diabetes is correct or not. Maybe Dr Roger Unger's glucagon-centric hypothesis is the reality. Ultimately what matters is whether his protocol actually reverses diabetes in significant numbers of folks, and does it safely. If the Fung protocol proves widely effective, and I hope it does, a Nobel Prize in Medicine may be in Dr Fung's future.-Steve Parker, M.D.Disclosures: I was given an Advance Reader's Copy of the book by the publisher's representative, otherwise I received no financial or other compensation. I don't know Dr Fung.Potential conflict of interest: I am a diet book author and blogger who advocates Mediterranean-style eating and low-carb eating for the general public and diabetics. If you only ever read one book for Diabetes this ... If you only ever read one book for Diabetes this is it. I was diagnosed wth Diabeties 16 years ago and wish I had this book then. Although I have controlled it with a low carb diet I have still occasionally suffered from symptoms that I associate with Diabetes side effects. I have been following Dr. Fung with fasting over the last few months loosing 30lbs but this book really put it all together for me. I can’t tell you how grateful l am for all the effort and work he has put into this. It was an eye opener in so many ways, explaining the disease in ways I have never heard before but makes absolute sense. Dr. Fung I cant thank you enough.

Just Buy it, It works. It will make you feel better. Once you start reading this book, you will start to feel better. If you suffer with depression, this book is better than any prescription I have tried. It deals with the here and now, and teaches you how to understand your own negative contribution to your depression, and it gives you several tools with which you can assess where you are at, how you talk to yourself, how you interpret others, and how to regain control over that narrative.Best book that I have ever read. It made a difference just reading, but much more so by using the knowledge and tools that Dr. Burns provides in the book. I bought copies for friends and family who have also had learned how to feel better and even feel good.I would give it 6 stars if I couldIgnore the negative reviews - it's worth a few bucks to judge for yourself Let me start by saying I have been an Amazon customer for twenty years and I have *never* reviewed anything before. But I consider this book to important for me to keep my mouth shut. It was a life-changer for me. Don't know why some reviewers are saying it is not helpful for people with severe depression - maybe some people with severe depression need a different approach, but let me speak for the rest of us. I was having suicidal thoughts, and on the highest doses of meds available. I was also in therapy. I tried two different therapists, both of whom wanted to talk about other people in my life - my parents, my husband, etc. - which was not helping me at all. I was at my wit's end, really scared that I was going to hurt myself if things didn't get better soon, when a friend recommended this book. You have to do the exercises - yes, they seem silly, but if they work, who the heck cares? Get a nice little notebook and a pen that you enjoy writing with. I made mine a sort of journal that I doodled in and added little inspirational quotes here and there. And yes, it is deceptively simple. Again, who cares? If standing on my head and whistling "Dixie" would have made me feel this much better, I'd be doing that, too. I started reading the book a month ago. I do not do all the excercises, but I did try all of them. I do what works for me. It's also true that there is the usual filler crap that you get in self-help books "Janet is a 40-year old dental assistant who came to me in 2005 suffering from..." blah, blah, blah. Just skip it. My depression is so much better that I am shocked. I am no longer thinking about suicide, and I am actually able to picture a future that is not completely empty and black. A future!!!!!! I have not had a future in years! I can't express what that means to me, but if you have depression, I don't have to. Try the book. If it doesn't work, I hope you will try something else, and keep on trying. You are not alone, and you deserve to be happy.

"A stunning conclusion to a breathtaking series.”

I thought I’d finally met the man of my dreams...

Marlowe
I’ve planned this night for weeks, down to the last detail. I want it to be perfect. Bringing someone new into my private life is not something I do lightly, having learned the hard way over the years that celebrity has a dark downside that I go out of my way to avoid whenever possible.

But he is different. We’ve been together for months and the time is right to take this next step with him.

It doesn’t take long for me to realize I’ve made a huge mistake trusting this man.

Before things go from bad to worse, I have the presence of mind to know I’m in big, big trouble.

Marlowe Sloane’s story, FAMOUS, is the thrilling conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Quantum Series.

Finally! We finally get Marlow’s story! I was so excited to read this book but also a little sad knowing it is the final Quantum book. I have loved this series and all these alpha men’s stories, but it is now time for Marlow. This book had a tough beginning and as hard as it was to read it was worth it for this story. I am not ruining it by telling her love interest but he was perfect for Marlow. It was so well written, like all of Marie’s books and it was great catching up with everyone from the past books. Marlow had a lot to over come in this book as well as her love interest but they are perfect for each other and it is a beautiful final chapter to this awesomely hot series. If you haven’t read the other books you don’t need to to enjoy this book but it makes it so much better if you have read all the past books. We got to see a very vulnerable side of Marlowe who everyone thinks has the perfect life being “Famous” but we see what she struggles with just like everyone else. Her love interest is trying to protect her and he faces a lot of inner turmoil to stay with her and the Quantum family comes through as always. Get this book you will not be disappointed!Marie Force knocks it out of the park again... I love Marie Force and this series is no different. I have always like Marlowe and I was really looking forward to her story and Marie did not let me know. It is a fabulous read and I agree with another reviewer you should read the other books before jumping into this one you will not be disappointed as it is a fabulous series. Marlowe's story is moving and really hit on some true issues that we as women face. I love that way you get to know Marlowe in a whole new light. She is strong, beautiful and complicated like all women are. I will be re-reading this series for years as I truly love the dynamic relationships throughout all these characters. If you have not read this series you really, really need too. It is truly a set of books you will love forever!Perfect ending to the series! Perfect ending to this series! While I hate what Marlowe went through in the beginning, it ended up leading to her happily ever after, so it was definitely worth it. Who knew that there were so many different levels to the H? (sorry - no spoilers from me!) I think he was the perfect complement to Marlowe, and I loved them together. I am very sad that this is it for the Quantum series, as I have been a HUGE fan of this series from the beginning, but the sendoff was everything this group of friends deserved and so much more. Thank you Ms. Force for sharing your Quantum world with us for the past 4 years.

This book should be required reading in schools in the United States. The ideas in this book are so simple, yet so powerful. We all have an inner voice (the Buddhists call it "monkey mind") that creates thoughts in our brain. These thoughts then make us feel a certain way. In knowing that our thoughts create how we feel, we can drastically improve the quality of our lives. This book shows that it's not what happens to us in life, it's what we think about it.For example, say you lose your job. Many people would then catastrophize and think negative thoughts about how awful it was, how we're going to be homeless and go broke and then we get depressed. Instead of thinking like that, we should think realistically about how it's tough that we lost our jobs, but we'll eventually find another one and that we will overcome the current crisis.I was a pessimist for years. Negative thinking becomes a habit and changes brain chemistry. By thinking more realistically and talking back to our negative thoughts, we can live much happier lives.Ignore the negative reviews - it's worth a few bucks to judge for yourself Let me start by saying I have been an Amazon customer for twenty years and I have *never* reviewed anything before. On meds for depression or anxiety, read this book and change your life. I was fortunate to learn that the author was trained at my alma-mater, and it gave me the initial faith to read this book and do the work inside. This is university tested and developed Cognitive Behavior Therapy made available to anyone, it's success has been documented in over 40,000 patients in double-blind peer-reviewed studies. It changed my life. For 15 years I WAS anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications, after reading this book, and doing the Cognitive Behavior Therapy exercises, I was able to wean myself off meds completely.
